State paid family leave
Several states run their own paid family leave programmes, with their own eligibility rules, their own payment levels and their own deadlines. They are separate from FMLA and separate from your employer's policy — you may qualify for one, all three, or none.
What people get wrong
- Federal and state leave are different things with different rules. Qualifying for one tells you nothing about the other.
- Some programmes require you to apply before or very shortly after the birth. Find the deadline early, while you can still think clearly.
This one differs by state
Completely. Whether a programme exists, who qualifies, how much it pays, how long it lasts and when you must apply are all set by your state. Check your state's own labour or employment development department — a national summary is not good enough for a deadline.
